Welcome to My Blog!

Hello!  This blog is meant to serve two purposes. The first is to challenge myself to loose weight and improve my health while using this blog to track my success. The second is to provide knowledge and inspiration to myself and others in the process.

As a medical student, I meet people daily who are struggling to manage their weight. Many are dieting with little to no success and most of it is due to the inability to initiate and maintain a successful routine. I, too, fall into this category. So it dawned on me that if I couldn't help myself, it would be difficult to help anyone else.

Over the last four years, I gained 25 pounds. Approximately 6 pounds per year. I no longer fit into my largest clothes, and I felt miserable. When stated that way, the weight itself seems trivial....but if I were to continue that course I would weigh 250 pounds before turning 45 years old and the habits are already extremely hard to stop. That weight would become increasingly hard on my heart, my joints, and it would make it hard for me to work and play with my children.

So I am challenging myself to find an exercise routine that will get the weight off ASAP, but then transition to something I can maintain for life. I started the weight loss part of the journey January of this year, and have lost 10 pounds since with a low carbohydrate diet and a combination of group aerobics classes. However, I am finding that it is difficult to keep motivated and keep on track and I am starting to slide backward. I hope through this I can move forward.

As you follow this blog you can track my progress in the "My Journey" section, read about exercise options and health supplements as I learn more about them, and hopefully gain a thing or two from my research.

As I will be collecting research on topics that are less strictly studied, please take this information at your own risk and build upon it as you see fit. This is a trial for me too! Postings will be based on both opinion and fact. Also, please feel free to email or post your thoughts as I would love to hear from you!

Hi Kim,

Faced another challenge last night & failed. So today I spent more time at Bible studies & thought maybe a great new interest will help me overcome my food addiction.

TIA,

Hi Kim,

Congrats on all your success so far!

I have a health question for you. I'm soon to be moving in with my boyfriend and I've been doing really well eating healthy options and exercising frequently. I'm concerned that once we move in together that I'll find myself eating less healthy foods because:
1)they're easier to prepare (especially in bulk because omg he eats soooo much!)
2)they're cheaper to prepare

Any suggestions on how to eat healthy as a couple without breaking the bank or spending 3 hours in the kitchen every night?

Thanks!

ShoeDoc1,

Hello! Thank you for checking out the blog! Your question is a great one and I applaud you for wondering that in advance.

I actually fell directly into that trap. I always had to watch what I ate, but when I got married....my husband did most of the cooking and his food was much better. We ate quesadillas, tacos, pizza, chips...and of course if he's eating it why shouldn't I (and I think I ate the same portions he did)!

I can't blame him....but I do think my lack of recognition was well...troublesome!

Quick meals that we have found tasty and cheap are:

1. Grilled Chicken salads (top with fresh fruit and goat cheese, or peppers, cucumber and feta)
2. Baked or Grilled Pork chops and veggie or sweet potato sides
3. Lean Turkey burgers topped with Feta or Lacey Swiss cheese...you can eat the burger by itself on spinach leaves and with tomato...or place them on Arnold Sandwich Flatbread.
4. Tuna fish platters...be creative with the veggies
5. Breakfast for dinner....make egg white Omelets with Honey Ham, Spinach, Light Cheese...

I don't know about your boyfriend, but I also learned with mine...that I have to let him have his pizza or quesidilla night in order to be happy....I try to either avoid that one...OR join him...depends what the rest of the week looked like. For my benefit...he stores his lunchtime snacks at work...but you may have better self control than I do.

We also started going to the gym together this year. That makes things a lot easier. If you can join a nearby gym I would recommend it...if not...there is always bike riding together, P90X (and other videos)that men seem to like too, or team sports...

I'm sure if you two talk about it things will work out! Best wishes! Let me know what works for you!
